Snap!

This work began as an experiment in sound design. The snap, crackle, & pop of my hip bone got very loud & frequent (& painful), so a week before my hip replacement, I sampled as many different sounds as I could emit from it. From these raw samples, I created a set of drums & a synth. Eventually, my experiment evolved into this short composition. I hope you enjoy this fun piece!

“Oh, Christ! It’s a boy!” screamed the mother to the daddy in the nursery.
“Gonna do everything we can---gonna try, try, try, for a goddamn girl.
And when we get what we want, we’re gonna send her straight to the doctor. Gonna mess with her mind and make her feel shame, shame, shame, let her know that she’s to blame.”

I didn’t understand that.
Alright.
Who should I call?
Alright.
Who should I call?

The cost of living was far too high,
But there was nowhere else to go.
“You’re over there, and I’m over here.”
Is what the little boy said.
But no one knew for certain who had said it was so.
“Make me heard. Don’t let me die.”
And then there was nothing,
Nothing at all.

I can’t believe
So when the air cleared
What I just saw.
She made one thing clear.
It was simply criminal
“Don’t let me die.”
When she ate him raw.
And when it was time to go
Eww, it makes me cringe
In a flash
When I think about it.
It was over.
Because all her pride
Who knew?
She might live without it.
No one, it seems.

So here we are, seven years later. And all we have to show for it are these chains around our necks. In the back seat there were voices who slid in and out of the upholstery, calling our names as if we were a bad accident. But we were just memories waiting for the executioner to appear on the scene with coffee for all of us to slurp like pigs.
