In Pursuit of Chaos

This first person singular narrative tells the story of a man in constant indecision, restlessness, irritability, and discontentedness. Many of us, in my experience, feel this way. We move from one catastrophe to the next, leaving immeasurable wreckage behind us. Chaos is our comfort zone. It is a place to belong.

lyrics

I built me a mansion
High upon a hill.
Dug a deep moat around it
And popped a lot of pills.
The view from the top
Took my breath away,
And I couldn’t get it back
So I knew I couldn’t stay.

So I burned down the mansion
And drained the moat.
Blew up the hill
Built me a boat.
I sailed for days
Till I found a storm
Then I jumped in the ocean
And the sharks began to swarm.

But the sharks paid no attention
And I couldn’t even drown.
Then I felt my father’s broken heart
When his picket fence came down.
And I heard my mama screamin’
Dad breathless in the hall
As we watched their son in law
Slam her body to the wall.

I prayed for redemption
And I prayed to be brave
But I was just a coward,
So I crawled into a cave.

I found a torch
And lit it with their pain,
Held it up in front of me
So I could find my way.
When the light began to flicker
I knew I’d lost my pride.
So I swallowed the fire,
Kept it burning deep inside.

I took their pain with me,
Wishing I was dead
But I couldn’t turn around
So I stumbled on ahead.
I prayed I’d hit bottom
Like I’d always hit before
But there wasn’t one to hit
And it shook me to the core.
