Many in Western society feel helpless to affect change in our world. We stand by in horror as our planet dies, and watch, paralyzed, as leaders act in their own self-interest. We have become numb to the atrocities we see every day in the media. We cope with an out-of-control world by self-medicating. We deny ugly truths by engaging in superficial activities and other useless distractions.

Wake up, wake up to the voices inside your head
Lying about who you are.
Believe, believe when they tell you that you’ll never be
Any more than all your scars.
Choose a mask for the day
To hide the pain you’re feeling inside.
Swallow a pill get behind the wheel,
Close your eyes and enjoy the ride.

We were born to follow
Can’t feel the pain with no backbone.
We want to be numb and hollow
So get in line to buy your headstone.

Drive, drive, drive into oblivion
Put your foot all the way to the floor.
Let the engine drown out the bloody fear
That you feel ‘cause you need more and more.
Let the water rise but don’t be surprised
When it reaches your door.

Said the man to his wife as she wept with her head down.
“No, no, no!” screamed the mother to her son as he shot up the downtown.
“Die, die, die!” said the woman to the beggar on the street with his hand out.
“Why, why, why?” screamed the girl to the sky as she died on the playground.
